Beaches near Rome

Italian Beaches near Rome:

The closest spiaggia, or beach, is at Ostia, which you can reach by train in about 35 minutes. There are 5 stops along the Lido, and each stop has beach clubs (stabilimento, admission: 4 E-20 E), some with pools. You have the option of going the day we go to Ostia Antica.  This beach is just fine; but if you have the time, there are nicer beaches. The option is yours.

Info taken from a website (I have not been to these): “The second and third beaches are Anzio & Nettuno. From Roma Termini a train can be taken to the towns of Anzio or Nettuno (about 2km apart), about 45-50 minutes. Nettuno is best to go around on foot. A good beach in Anzio is called Grotte di Nerone (one of the 7 Roman Emperors) and in Nettuno "Spiaggia le Sirene". Anzio/Nettuno beaches are close walk from the train station, the town is more compact in Nettuno as it is the smallest one. If you are on your own, I would recommend Nettuno.”

Dr. W's favorite beach--so pretty! The best beach to reach from Rome is at Sperlonga; it is beautiful. Take the train in the direction of Naples, from Termini to Fondi, early in the morning, about one hour. Then take the Cotral bus from Fondi to the Sperlonga beach, about 30 minutes. There are pay establishments where you get an umbrella or chair (20 E), or there is a small free beach as well. The hill town is beautiful, and reminiscent of Greece; I recommend a trip away from the beach as well to explore the beautiful labyrinth streets! Return on the bus in the late afternoon to the train station from a bus stop near the alimentari, or grocery store.

In 2009 we stopped via car at the beach at San Severa, one hour north of Rome; it was very nice and had a medieval castle right on the ocean. Budget Frommer’s magazine had a small article on it; it is possible to take a train there, but you will need to walk about 15 minute to get to the beach. I have heard that the small beach at Santa Marinella, one stop past San Severa, is nice as well, but have not been.
